Thank you for joining the Vision Support Team of Salisbury United Church in exploring the questions of vision and future direction with our community of faith. You will find below this week's material to get you started. This is the first of six weekly sessions. In this session we explore that the world has changed for faith communities compared to one or more generations ago. As you take time to consider the prayers, readings and videos you will encounter on this web page, we encourage you to think of the time you spend here as more than just something that touches you intellectually. We invite you to also place your heart and spirit in the mix, as you consider what God is calling us to be as United Church people in the time we are in.
1. Begin By Reading
"Every five hundred years, give or take a decade or two, Western culture,.....goes through a time of enormous upheaval, a time in which essentially every part of it is reconfigured. .... We can see, from the latter years of the fourteenth century to the dramatic one of 1517 when Martin Luther posted his ninety-five theses on the door in Wittenberg, a process of wrenching, deconstructing, liberating, anxiety-producing world-rending change... . That's now too! It is also us."
(Phyllis Tickle, Emergence Christianity, Baker Books, 2012, pp. 17-21)
2. Offer Prayer
Good and loving God, our source of love and light,
thank you for bringing me to this time.
Help me to open myself to discernment
with a spirit of generosity.
May I open my mind to move beyond
my usual assumptions about what works.
May I listen, explore, consider
with an open heart.
Above all, may I have patience to discern
with others your mission and purpose
for our community of faith.
I ask for wisdom and grace for all of us
entering into discernment about the next steps
in the life of Salisbury United Church.
Help us to be open to using our talents and gifts
wisely and well for the future
you have in store for us.
With gratitude, I offer this prayer.
